More people than normal need help providing a Thanksgiving meal this year due to the pandemic.

That’s why The Rescue Mission opened up their meal delivery services to anyone who couldn’t afford it, in addition to providing for the elderly and home bound.

This year they delivered more than 2,100 meals, a 25% increase from last year.

COVID-19 restrictions meant fewer volunteers could be inside putting together meals. It also changed the way the food was packed, but volunteers quickly adjusted.

“Having less people is taking a little more time, but our wonderful delivery drivers are being so patient with us. They are really in the holiday spirit. They are here because they really want to give back and because they care about the people we serve. They care about our neighbors and they really care about making sure everyone has the best Thanksgiving possible in these conditions,” said Rescue Mission Chief Development Officer Tori Shires.

Shelter residents were still able to enjoy a dine-in meal, but most meals were delivered or picked-up.
