The on-ice play is fast and furious. Just outside the playing surface, Tyler Ten Eyck and Brian Janz are watching with a close eye.

The two are part of the Syracuse Crunch ice crew, tasked with maintaining the playing surface. And while the players' tool of choice is a stick, theirs are shovels.

“I’ve been doing this about five years now. We have about 100 seconds or roughly a minute and a half to go down there get as much snow off the ice because we have to be off by the time the commercial break is done,” said Tyler Ten Eyck.

During a stoppage in play, it’s show time as Tyler and Brian take to the ice. The well-oiled crew works in unison up and down the 200-foot playing surface, scraping off the snow one shovel push at a time.

Once done, it's back to watching until the period ends and more work needs to be done. While the players and referees are off the ice, and fans are grabbing a drink, Tyler is back on the playing surface.

First, he has to remove the nets. The peg holes that hold the nets in place have developed some ice during the period, and that’s where Tyler’s new equipment comes in handy.

“So this is 180-degree water. It melts the snow down in the peg hole right here,” explains Tyler.

Then, all that water is tediously removed.

“It’s something really fun to do. It’s pretty cool to skate in the second-best league in the world,” said Tyler.

Then it's time to reset the nets before as the Crunch take the ice for the second period. And for the 43rd period this season, Tyler and Brian are watching again, waiting for the next opportunity to clean the ice.
