The race for the 23rd Congressional District Democratic primary is too close to call.

Cyber-security expert Tracy Mitrano and retired U.S. Air Force colonel Max Della Pia were neck-and-neck all night, with the numbers ping-ponging back and forth between the two candidates. Della Pia and Mitrano are separated by a couple dozen votes with all precincts reporting. Della Pia picked up 7,022 votes, but Mitrano is sitting on 6,996.

Della Pia claimed victory in the race, but both candidates are expecting a recount. The winner will face off against Republican incumbent Tom Reed in the general election in November.

The 23rd Congressional District includes all of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates counties, and parts of Ontario and Tioga counties. The primary featured three other candidates: retired cardiologist Linda Andrei, small businessman Ian Golden and lawyer Eddie Sundquist.

Reed's campaign responded last night, saying in part, "It’s no surprise that with a field of Extreme Ithaca Liberal options to choose from, the Democrats couldn’t make a definitive selection in their Primary on Tuesday."
