Twelve people were injured in a fire Thursday night in the Village of Monroe after an explosion and heavy fire at a home on Cromwell Road.

The fiery explosion injured twelve students studying at Brooklyn's Yeshiva University.

Firefighters were called to the Quaker Hill Cottages in Monroe just after midnight when a bungalow that the students were staying in suddenly burst into flames. Four of the students had to be hospitalized with burns. Eight other students suffered minor injuries and returned home.

Officials say it took eight fire departments 40 minutes to extinguish the flames.

A rabbi from the school says the 12th grade class of 48 boys and one staff member was on a graduation trip and had just arrived when they smelled gas.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the explosion.
