GLENVILLE, N.Y. -- Glenville's Police Department, which has not seen any significant upgrade since it opened in 1986, will soon get expanded prisoner holding rooms, along with new fingerprinting and blood-testing facilities.

Town officials joined state Sen. Jim Tedisco on Tuesday to announce a $1.5 million state grant to fund improvement projects at the police headquarters, housed in a former movie theater, behind the town hall.

Glenville's cramped quarters include just two prisoner holding rooms with benches and handcuffs, unsecured and located just around the corner from the department's center office location.

Upgrades will include an expansion of the prisoner transport bay where squad cars park to unload persons in custody. The department also hopes to build a new area for booking, mugshot photography and blood-alcohol analysis.

"In today's times, you kind of have to do the best with what you have," said Glenville Police Chief Stephen Janik. "It's very rewarding to hear that you can secure some funding, and be able to make those improvements, that you know you couldn't make with the current (budget) that you're in."

Design work on the upgrades should begin within several months, after various town approvals are made.
