A Newburgh area church held their first annual communities block party on Saturday to help engage the community outside of regular church services.

The event on First Street in Newburgh featured face painting, music and zumba, and free food for the community. The Life Restoration Church worked with local sponsors to hold the event from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Church leadership says it was a way to show the positive energy in the area.

"Everybody's just enjoying themselves and having fun,” said Pastor Robert and Sharon McLemore of Life Restoration Church. “And that's what really matters that we all come together and have fun. And also that the church goes beyond the four walls, beyond Sunday service and Wednesday bible study. It goes beyond that."

Organizers say that they relied on sponsor donations to support the event, and members of the church worked to coordinate the festivities.
