ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The search for a Perinton couple, who were last seen and heard from in late January, resumed Thursday morning near where the Genesee River meets Lake Ontario.

There, a vehicle detected in the water by SCUBA teams Wednesday matched the description of the Kia Sorrento driven by Robert and Mary Ross. Officials confirmed Thursday, the vehicle belonged to couple.

Both Robert and Mary, who are in their 70s, disappeared. Deputies say Robert was last seen at a medical appointment on January 30, and a concerned social worker then notified authorities.

Their last known phone call from either of them was determined to be made from Charlotte, where a call was made from Mary's pre-paid cell phone to the hospital. That's where search efforts have revolved around.

Underwater cameras and sonar equipment helped searchers zero-in on a stretch of the river close to the boat launch by Pelican's Nest. Deputies said this car apparently drifted before becoming stuck in the mud at the bottom of the river. An effort to salvage the car began Thursday morning.

Police have not yet confirmed with 100 percent certainty that this is the Ross' car, but did notify the couple's son and told him to prepare for the worst. Robert's son says that his father was recently diagnosed with stage four brain cancer.
