ROCHESTER, N.Y. — From blue ribbons around trees and mailboxes to blue front porch lights, the greater Rochester community is sharing symbols of support and healing for fallen officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz of the Rochester Police Department. Mazurkiewicz was shot and killed on July 21. That outpouring of respect is nationwide.

Teenager Zachariah Cartledge, who founded the non-profit Running for Heroes, uses his love of long-distance running to honor fallen first responders. Monday evening in Florida he ran a mile in honor of Mazurkiewicz.

“To the whole family of fallen officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, his wife and children and all the friends of his 29 years of service in the Rochester Police Department, we hope you all heal very soon for the passing of your loved one,” said Cartledge.

With a moment of silence, a run and a prayer, it is a simple and appreciated tribute to honor officer Mazurkiewicz, his family and the entire Rochester community.

Since Cartledge founded Running 4 Heroes, he has run more than 1,280 miles and raised some $500,000 for families of fallen heroes, injured first responders and to help with the purchase of protective K-9 equipment.
