GREECE, N.Y. -- Quick work by fire crews early Sunday morning helped stop flames from destroying a home in the town of Greece.

Two people who live inside the California Drive house were able to escape just after midnight.

Fire crews got inside and knocked down the fire before it could spread.

Firefighters say both residents suffered from smoke inhalation.

"Smoke detectors went off alerted the homeowners to the fire and they were able to make their escape and were coming out the side door as they arrived. i think one of the two will probably be transported to the hospital,” said Barnard Fire Department Chief John Nolan.

Some smoke and water damage is going to keep the two residents from returning home for a little while according to firefighters. In the meantime, the Red Cross is helping.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
