SCHERTZ, Texas – A person is injured after a package en route to Austin exploded at a Schertz FedEx processing plant just after midnight on Tuesday.

A medium sized package exploded on a conveyor track when it was hit by a metal arm in the sorting area of the facility. Inside the package was metal shrapnel and nails.

According to Sunset Valley police, the package was from a South Austin FedEx location on Brodie Lane to be sent to an address in Austin. The package ended up in Schertz where it exploded.

The Schertz FedEx is located on the 9900 block of Doerr Lane and Lookout Road.

Officials said an employee standing next to the package explosion had ringing in her ears afterwards. She was treated and released at the scene.

At a press conference, SAPD Chief William McManus said there were two packages found at the facility, but then a later update said there was only one package. However, FedEx is now claiming there was a second package shipped from the same individual who sent the one that exploded, but that package has now been turned over to officials.

Sunday night in Austin, marked the fourth package explosion. The Schertz explosion makes the fifth explosion in area since March 2.

So far, a total of two people have died and now five people have been injured in the explosions over the past 18 days. Interim Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said on Tuesday that investigators clearly have a serial bomber on their hands.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Schertz police, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, San Antonio bomb squad, and Home Land Security are investigating.

FedEx released the following statement:

“We can confirm that a single package exploded while in a FedEx Ground sortation facility early this morning.  One team member is being treated for minor injuries. We are working closely with law enforcement in their investigation.  We are not providing any additional specific information about this package at this time.”
