ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Rochester firefighters helped rescue four people trapped in an apartment fire early Sunday morning.

Fire crews were called just before 4 a.m. to the Cambridge Court Apartments on Dodge Street.  They pulled up to find heavy flames coming from the first floor and tenants trapped on the second.

Fire officials say working smoke detectors woke up the residents, but the smoke was too thick in the hallway for them to escape.  No one was injured.

They say flames gutted the first floor.

Firefighters say it appears the fire started in the kitchen area, but the cause remains under investigation.

The Red Cross is now helping the displaced residents.
