ROCHESTER N.Y. – To mourn the loss of 23-year-old James Garbach, family and loved ones held a vigil and bike ride on Lake Avenue at Denise Road Saturday night, the location where the fatal hit-and-run took place.

Those closest to Garbach say he was very kind and loved his bike.

“He’s the type of kid who would give you his shirt off his back. Very humble, caring,” said family friend, James Revell. “I’m very sad that it had to happen.”

Revell says he’s known Garbach since he was 7 years old, and that he was very close to his son. Motorcyclists who attended the vigil were also close, and wanted to celebrate his life and ride in his honor.

During the vigil, some bikers voiced their concern about texting and driving to bring awareness to those who don’t pay attention to those driving on two wheels.

Only moments after the vigil, following the bike ride-off, a 22-year-old on his motorcycle was hit from behind by a truck and knocked down along with his bike, according to authorities.

The driver of the truck left and was immediately pursued by a group of bikers.

Police say the truck driver, an unidentified 56-year-old man from Gates, was stopped on Britton Road near Durkar Lane in the Town of Greece, and he has not been charged.

Police say the man who was hit refused treatment at the hospital, and was given a ticket for unsafe start and driving with a license out of class.

“They say that some people don’t care about bikers, so me, I ride myself and you just have to be more observant of riders because they take up a smaller space and they do appear in your blind spot, so just take an extra second and just look and pay attention,” said biker Darius Stribling.

Police have not yet located the person who they believe struck James Garbach on his motorcycle and then drove away.
