Public safety crews in the city of Geneva are investigating a petroleum spill in the north end of Seneca Lake, city officials announced Sunday.

The city says they were notified of the spill Saturday afternoon.

City police, fire, and public works departments have been on-site and have been working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate the spill’s origins and contain and clean the spill.

The NYSDEC says spill response crews tracked the source of the petroleum to a leaking fuel container that caused fuel to leak onto the ground and into a storm sewer, eventually reaching Marsh Creek and Seneca Lake. Officials say an undetermined amount of petroleum was released from a container.

Spill mitigation protocols are underway, according to the NYSDEC, and an investigation is ongoing.
