Memories of the Syracuse police officer and Onondaga County sheriff's lieutenant who were killed Sunday night while responding to a call poured in from across Central New York, where they were recalled as dedicated members of their communities. Sympathies and condolences for their families were also expressed in Onondaga County on what was a dark Monday for many.

Flags in many areas were flying at half-staff to honor Police Officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga County Sheriff Lt. Michael Hoosock, who were shot Sunday night while trying to apprehend a suspect at a home on Darien Drive in the town of Salina, the heads of their departments said Monday.

City police officers and members of the sheriff's office converged on the home after 7 p.m. Monday during a pursuit of a vehicle, but were struck by gunfire by a man who came out of the home and opened fire, officials said. The suspect — identified by Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick as Christopher R. Murphy, 33, of Salina — was also shot and killed.

Residents of the community where the fatal shootings took place expressed sadness and disbelief as they learned of the severity of what occurred. Neighbors said such actions and events are simply not the norm where they live.

“This is a very quiet neighborhood," said Rachele Schulze-Phoenix. "In the back of the neighborhood, we don’t get a lot of traffic back here. Very safe for the kids. Kids are always outside playing. It was very disturbing to have that ruined last night. Really, very unsettling feeling.”

“I heard clearer like three shots, I thought it was gunshots," said James Dattler. "I wasn’t sure, followed by a couple of seconds, (then) there was like five or six shots…right in a row. Like, 'bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.'“

Messages of support and solidarity came from county executives and legislators across the area and state.

In a statement, the Moyers Corners Fire Department said Hoosock, a 16-year member of the department who moved up its ranks, dedicated his life to public safety.

"To say he will be missed is an extreme understatement," the statement says.

Jensen was recalled as someone who was proud to live in and serve the city of Syracuse. He worked in the Patrol Division on the Third Platoon. He had earned an Officer of the Month award in December.

St. Joseph’s Hospital announced its tower will be illuminated in blue to honor Hoosock and Jensen.
