A man was shot and killed in a Fourth of July shooting in Utica, according to authorities.

Utica police and fire units responded to the scene at the intersection of Howard Avenue and James Street around 10:40 p.m. Friday following reports of a gunshot victim.

When they arrived, police say there was a large crowd surrounding a 39-year-old gunshot victim. Officials say when crews attempted life-saving efforts, members of the group allegedly began to physically impede them from doing so.

One Utica police officer was injured at this time, according to authorities, and was taken to Wynn Hospital for treatment.

Eventually, crews say they got the gunshot victim into an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.

Five people were also arrested while officers were attempting to secure the crime scene at James Street and Seymour Avenue after they allegedly became physical with officers again.

The investigations into the shooting and subsequent incidents are ongoing.
