GETZVILLE, N.Y. — Firehouses across New York are opening their doors this weekend to recruit volunteers.

It's part of an annual statewide effort to increase the number of volunteer firefighters and raise awareness of legislative issues impacting volunteer fire departments.

The Firefighters Association of New York State, also known as FASNY, says over the last two years, the number of volunteers has dropped by more than 4,000, while call volume has increased.

Nearly 90% of fire departments across New York are volunteer-based.

Breanna Fuss visited the Getzville Fire Company to talk about why this is so important and what you need to do to become a volunteer firefighter.
