AUSTIN, Texas – Travis County officials are requesting an update to their 16-year-old voting system.

Currently voters are suing the E-slate system, which has been used in every election since 2001. Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir issued a Request for Proposals on Nov. 9 for an updated system.

“The election marketplace is on notice that we will accept nothing less than a state-of-the-art, secure, accessible election system for Travis County voters,” said DeBeauvoir.

Originally, the county planned to build a customized system with advanced security and accessibility features not available on the market. However, officials were unable to advance that model.

The Clerk’s Office said the goal of the new election system is to maximize current and innovative technologies with necessary security features.

A new voting system is expected to be available in the 2020 Presidential election.
