TEXAS – Six children, suffering burns from the deadly Guatemalan volcano, are being treated in Texas.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston said the kids are in critical condition. Most of them are on ventilators.

However, doctors said they remain optimistic and are preparing the kids and their families for rehabilitation.

"I was able to spend some time with a couple of the families this morning and of course they're very very grateful and happy for our help. We will not only be focusing on the children. Of course, we're mostly focused on the children, but we want to put - we also focus on the families so the children are going to go back to a supportive environment," said Dr. Stephen Wolf with the Shiners Hospital.

The children are currently in intensive care.

Joint Base San Antonio medics and the Air Force brought the children and their guardians to the U.S. early Thursday morning.

A group of Texans are packing up to head to Guatemala to help with relief efforts in some of the area’s poorest communities.
