SAN ANTONIO — Advocates for sick paid time are, again, calling on the City of San Antonio to verify signatures for their pending petition.

Petitioners submitted paperwork to the Office of the City Clerk on May 24. The petition is a push for all local businesses to provide paid sick leave.

Per the City Charter, the city clerk has 20 days to verify if signatures are from registered voters. Originally, the city and petitioners were at odds over whether that meant 20 calendar days, or 20 business days.

This week, petitioners attended a the last city council meeting before their summer break to confirm verification would be done by Friday's business day deadline.

However, the City Clerk's Office says it's still verifying more than 142,000 signatures on the petition.

"We do know that certification needs to happen quickly if we are to remain eligible for the November ballot, so we hope City Council puts the appropriate pressure on the city clerk to accomplish certification," Alex Birnel of Move Texas said.

In a statement, City Attorney Andy Segovia said the city clerk will share her review during the next scheduled city council meeting on August 2.

The deadline to make the November ballot is August 20.
