AUSTIN, Texas — Brayden Buchanan grew up loving baseball and football. He never saw the need to pick one sport over the other, and that continues now as he’s a two-sport star at Vandegrift High School.

What You Need To Know

  • Buchanan is the starting quarterback for the football team at Vandegrift High

  • He’s also the starting catcher on the Vipers baseball team

  • The two-sport athlete is committed to play baseball at Baylor

  • On his off-time, he loves to wake surf

“I never thought about a first and second sport,” says Buchanan. “It’s season to season, there’s baseball season and there’s football season.”

Sometimes those seasons do overlap a little. In the spring, Buchanan is the starting catcher for the Vipers baseball team, while also going through spring football practice as the teams starting quarterback.

“With me playing quarterback, it’s two different throwing motions,” says Buchanan. “Got to run an offense in the mornings and then come out here and focus up, but I enjoy the challenge.”

On the baseball field, Brayden is rated as one of the top junior players in the state. He got offers to play at some major colleges but ultimately decided to commit to Baylor.

“I love the coaching staff,” says Buchanan. “Both of my parents went there so it felt like home for me.”

He has not shut the door on playing football in college if the right opportunity comes up. Last season, as the starting QB for Vandegrift, he helped the Vipers go 12-2 and reach the 4th round of the playoffs.

While he focuses a lot of his attention and time on sports, Brayden does have plenty of things he likes to do away from the field.

“I enjoy going on the lake, I enjoy wakesurfing and wakeboarding,” says Buchanan. “I’m also a big scuba diver. Me and my dad like to go scuba diving.”
