TEXAS — Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is aiming to pass Texas Legislation that mimics the Florida Bill "Don't Say Gay" law. Members of an Austin Theater Group say they have the chance to represent Texas and inclusion on one of the world's biggest stages. Monica Ortiz spoke to two of the singers ahead of LGBTQ+ New York Pride.

Mela Dailey is a member of the Austin Artists Project. She's also one of the lead singers in "Sing Out," a project centered around LGBTQ+ inclusion.

It premiered in Austin last summer, but now it's headed to New York Pride at the Lincoln Center.

For Dailey, an Austin native, it's a chance to speak up for Texas and the LGBTQ+ community.

“It's something that we're all really proud of, but we can't stop currently — at least not until we vote on what's happening in Texas and Florida. But we're gonna say 'gay' a lot, and we're gonna sing it a lot. And I feel like it's our way to move the needle a little bit and to fight back in ways that are positive and uplifting," Dailey said.

Austin native Kenny Williams is also one of the lead singers. His song is about home, a place he missed when living in New York City.

“It means a lot. To come back with such a beautiful message of acceptance and love for those people who may not feel like they are at home,” Williams said.

Together, they hope their message inspires the generations to come.

“Artists are meant to be rebellious, we are meant to kind of push the needle, and to do everything in our power to widen the circle of inclusion,” Dailey said.
