TEXAS — Texas summers are hot and getting hotter, according to a new report. According to analysis from USA Today, Texas dominates a list of cities that are stacking up days with a heat index of 90 degrees or higher, with Abilene and Amarillo leading the way.
The report marks places where there are more days with a heat index of 90 or higher since 1985. Although two New Mexico cities, Rio Rancho (+39 days) and Albuquerque (+36 days), top the list, the top 15 cities are dominated by places in Texas, which contributes eight of them.
Aside from Abilene and Amarillo at +36, other cities on the list include Killeen, Houston, McAllen and Laredo.
Austin is also on the list, with an index of +26 days at 90 or higher.
Last year was the hottest ever on record, and NOAA predicts that this summer will be at least in the top five.
Additionally, high temperatures are arriving earlier and staying longer, making the summer last longer in ways that trend dangerously. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heat is the number one cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S.
