DALLAS — Next year, residents in Oak Cliff can expect to see an urgent care clinic in their neighborhood, giving them additional options when it comes to caring for their health. The City of Dallas teamed up with Advance Community Fund to build the Marsalis Avenue Urgent Care Clinic in the Glendale Shopping Center.

What You Need To Know

  • With the help of a local non-profit, Advance Community Fund, and the City of Dallas, Oak Cliff will be home to the Marsalis Avenue Urgent Care Clinic

  • Construction is expected to be completed in early 2022

  • Both a loan from Advance Community Fund and a grant from the City of Dallas paved the way for the construction of the clinic

“The city is committed to its promise to prioritize growth and prosperity to residents in southern Dallas,” Marsalis Avenue Urgent Care Clinic chief economic development officer Dr. Eric Anthony Johnson said in a press release. “This clinic and the access to health services it will provide is another step forward in helping the city’s most underserved populations thrive.”

Set up in what officials describe as a “medically underserved” neighborhood, the Marsalis Avenue Urgent Care Clinic will aid in helping officials find solutions in solving the health disparity issues in Oak Cliff.

“The addition of the Glendale Medical Center is a tremendous investment in the health and welfare of our community- especially in the 75216 ZIP code,” District 4 councilmember Carolyn King Arnold said in a press release. “This center will begin to close the gap for medical care that has plagued the community for years. This is a giant step towards Healthcare Equity.”

Back in June of 2020, Dr. D.G. Edwards secured the property for the urgent care clinic. Edwards is no stranger to the area, having worked in Oak Cliff until he relocated to Lancaster to work in emergency medicine after closing his practice in 2001. According to Edwards, it was seeing a need for quality health care for all and those suffering from chronic health conditions that led him back to his roots.

"The Marsalis Avenue Urgent Care Clinic is a move in the right direction for southern Dallas, and I am excited to have a second chance to serve those who need health care the most,” Edwards said in a statement. “By opening an easily accessible, seven days a week clinic we’ll be able to improve access for not just the community but working families as well.”

With help from the City of Dallas, Edwards linked up with Advance Community Fund chairman and CEO Michael Yorba. The non-profit aims to establish affordable housing, medical clinics and grocery stores in southern Dallas. The construction for the clinic will come from a loan from Advance Community Fund— an emerging Community Development Financial Institution that assists with the economic development in low to moderate-income areas— along with a grant from the City of Dallas.

“We are a group of concerned and committed corporate citizens doing our part with the City of Dallas to help cost-burdened citizens find affordable health care,” Yorba said in a statement. “We endeavor to work with partners like Edwards who have positive intent, integrity and the will to serve the community, in order to create economic mobility and community revitalization that benefits underserved communities.”

The grand opening for the facility is slated for early 2022.
