The incident took place at the site of Health First’s new Cape Canaveral Hospital. The crane was over the unfinished building at 255 Borman Drive when the incident happened around 2 p.m.

The two injured were taken to a nearby hospital where they later died.

A spokesperson with the construction management company for this project, Gilbane Building Company, said both victims were trade contract workers.

One was employed by Baker Concrete and the second by a separate trade contractor.

In a statement released by Lance Skelly, Health First’s public media relations system director, the accident was due to “a serious weather-related incident.”

“Earlier today, there was a serious weather-related incident at the Cape Canaveral Hospital construction site involving a crane,” Skelly stated in the press release on Wednesday.

High winds and rain passed over Merritt Island on Wednesday afternoon, with Spectrum News meteorologists measuring winds of up to 55 miles per hour in that area at the time of the crane collapse.

The crane that fell crushed a work truck and damaged the site’s roof.

Skelly also added, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families, loved ones, and all those affected.”

In a separate statement issued by the Gilbane Building Company, it said that “work is currently suspended,” adding, “We are supporting our trade contractors and working with them and the authorities on an active investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Currently, the site is secure and under an active investigation.

Law enforcement and OSHA investigators were on site on Wednesday.

Authorities have not released the identities of the two victims.
