Before you know it, a new school year will begin and with that is an ongoing need for back-to-school supplies to help children and teachers.
When students don’t have what they need at the start of the school year, many teachers dig into their own pockets to provide supplies. Here are a few opportunities to donate school items to help get students focused on the road to learning success:

Donations of school supplies are accepted 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on most weekdays at Hawaii Literacy’s main administrative office at 245 N. Kukui Street, #202. Because they have a small staff, they ask potential donors to call the office before going to ensure someone will be available, 808-537-6706. Visit their website for a wishlist of snacks, school supplies and books.
Distribution events
Helping Hands Hawaii Supply Distribution Events, July 14, 15, 17 & 19
Helping Hands Hawaii’s Ready to Learn initiative ensures that every student has the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. They will distribute backpacks for students at the following locations in July from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Windward Community College, July 14; Nanakuli Elementary School, July 15; and Kapolei High School, July 17.
The final distribution event on July 19 will be at the Helping Hands Hawaii warehouse, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and will include community resources and HHH programs and SNAP Education. Limited supplies will be distributed while they last — first to families who register (9-11 a.m.), then to walk-ins (noon-3 p.m.). Parking will be available at Puuhale Elementary School and Ohana Self Storage fronting Puuhale Elementary.
This year’s goal is to provide 3,000 backpacks to students in need. If you would like to donate — a $50 donation covers one backpack filled with supplies — visit the HHH donation portal.
This list will be updated with more events as they become available. If you have any you’d like to include, please email information to sarah.yamanaka@charter.com. Mahalo!
