GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Martin Dixon Intergenerational Center at Bennett College welcomed children back for the first time in over a year this fall.

Last year, Bennett College closed its child care center along with its other buildings on campus due to the impact of the pandemic 

This fall it partnered with Guilford Child Development to begin offering head start education to preschoolers in the area

The partnership addresses the need for more affordable child care in the U.S.

Due to the COVID-19 the center closed its doors in early 2020, but it recently partnered with Guilford Child Development to begin offering head start education to preschoolers in the area for free.

“In this program the families have to be income eligible to participate, and it gives our children in the community just like what it says, a head start,” Martin Dixon Intergenerational Center Director Wanda Young said.

Young’s  job is to make sure the federally funded program is running according to its standards. 

She said that since the center opened, her team has gone above and beyond to provide quality care to the children who participate in the program

"I'm not successful at what I do unless they're here to do what they do, then that gives me the ability to be successful at the work that I do, and I really care about them, and I really appreciate them," Young said.

Young also said parents in the community are thrilled to have those services in the community for free. 

Guilford Child Development has a total of 14 early childhood education centers in the county.
