HIGH POINT, N.C. — The loyal fans of Carolina Core FC made the short trip to Cary to watch the team play North Carolina FC.

Among the spectators, Megan Oglesby, the principal investor, stood out as she watched with great intensity.

While Piedmont-Triad soccer fans have embraced Carolina Core FC in their inaugural season of Major League Soccer (MLS) Next Pro league, Oglesby said she has been behind the scenes for over two years preparing the team for these moments.

The High Point native is the executive director of the Earl and Kathryn Congdon Foundation.

She became the principal investor of Carolina Core FC when the city announced they were bringing a team to compete in the MLS Next Pro league.

While the Core is focused on developing the players on the pitch, Oglesby said she’s focused on developing the front office staff and overall brand of the team.

One sign that the fans have gone crazy over the franchise — merchandise is flying off the shelves.

“We cannot keep, we’ve had to reorder a lot of merch, which is fantastic,” Oglesby said.

Under the umbrella of MLS, Oglesby is just the second female majority owner, and despite being in the minority, Oglesby leads a staff that helps bring former success and different skills to the franchise.

“I certainly don’t have a sports industry background so it was really important to me to build a team around us of experts that did have that background,” Oglesby said.

The success of the Core early in the season is a testament to that staff since the team hasn’t played a home game yet.

Their home opener is on June 1 at Trust Point in High Point.
