SAN ANTONIO — Gregg Popovich will no longer be the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced Friday.
According to a statement posted on X, Popovich will be the team's new president of basketball operations.
"While my love and passion for the game remain, I've decided it's time to step away as head coach," Popovich said in a statement. "I'm forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs' head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and the city that are so meaningful to me."
In his time as head coach, Popovich has led the Spurs to five championships and is the all-time winningest coach in NBA history.
The Spurs also posted a tribute video to "Coach Pop" on X.
Over the past year, the 76-year-old has been dealing with some health issues, including a stroke at the Spurs’ arena on Nov. 2. Since then, Mitch Johnson has been acting as head coach.
Popovich agreed to a five-year contract extension with the team in 2023, one that would have him signed to be on the sideline through the 2027-28 season.
