Health officials in Genesee and Orleans counties are warning the public of a noticeable increase in bat encounters.
The Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments (GO Health) say warmer weather can lead to bats becoming more active. These bats may end up in homes, especially in older, non-properly sealed homes.
“If you find a bat in your home, safely capture it and immediately contact the health department,” Environmental Health Director for GO Health Darren Brodie said in a statement. “We can assess whether there was potential exposure and if the bat needs to be tested. If you are unable to safely capture the bat, call the health department for guidance on the next steps to take.”
GO Health released a video on how to safely capture a bat and has tips on Orleans County's website. But if you do not feel comfortable attempting to safely secure the bat, officials say you can contact your local health department during regular business hours:
- Genesee County: (585) 344-2580 x5555
- Orleans County: (585) 589-3278
Or you can call the county dispatch after regular business hours:
- Genesee County: (585) 343-5000
- Orleans County: (585) 589-5527
