An Oneida County Sheriff's deputy is accused of setting fire to a home with his baby and the child's mother inside.

Aaron Alshaman, 29 of Lee Center, faces four counts of attempted murder as well as arson charges.

Police say he set fire to a Kellogg Avenue house in Utica; the homeowner called 911 when smoke was detected, and everyone in the house made it out safely. Utica firefighters extinguished the fire, which investigators later determined to be an arson attempt.

The homeowner told police that Alshaman was the father of her child, and that Alshaman had recently been served with custody papers.

Utica Police arrested Alshaman after they said their investigation showed Alshaman's sheriff's vehicle was parked close to the Kellogg Avenue home before the fire, then left the area after the fire was determined to have started. He was arraigned Thursday in Oneida County Court.
