1. Democratic governors defend immigration policies before Republican-led House panel

As President Donald Trump spars with California's governor over immigration enforcement, Republicans in Congress called other Democratic governors to the Capitol on Thursday to question them over policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

2. Trump admin sues N.Y. over law barring warrantless immigration arrests at courthouses

The Trump administration sued New York state Thursday over a law that blocks immigration officials from arresting people at state courthouses, saying it purposely shields dangerous criminals.

3. How New York is addressing the safety concerns that come with more electric vehicles on the road

By the end of this year, a state mandate requires all passenger cars, SUVs and pickup truck sales to be 35% electric. By 2030, that number climbs to 68%. It reaches 100% by 2035. The batteries in those vehicles are lithium-ion.

4. Tracking harmful algae blooms on the Finger Lakes

Bill Roege has spent more than a decade studying Seneca Lake. He’s president of the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association, working with around 1,000 members to collect samples and track lake activity. One of the biggest threats Roege and his team track are harmful algal blooms, or HABs. The association has been monitoring HABs on Seneca Lake since 2014, one of the first groups to do so. Roege says over the years, the frequency and intensity of HABs increased. 

5. Three Mid-State correction officers reject plea deals

Five of the 10 officers charged in connection with the death of Messiah Nantwi at Mid-State Correctional Facility earlier this year were back in Oneida Couty court Thursday to discuss their plea offers.

6. At least 240 people, including those on the ground, killed in Air India crash, official says

An Air India passenger plane bound for London crashed into a medical college in the northwestern city of Ahmedabad after takeoff Thursday, killing at least 240 people in one of India's worst airline disasters in decades, officials said.
