GREECE, N.Y. — It sure feels like winter is here and is sticking around a bit longer.  

Looking at what’s new to do indoors in Monroe County‘s largest town, the Greece Community Center underwent renovations and is adding new fitness areas.

  • Greece Community Center renovations include a new reception desk area, remodeled restrooms and new entrance, new toddler gym space, remodeled and expanded senior lounge and additional activities and sports including teqball

There is a brand new sport at the Greece Community Center. It's called teqball. Supervisor Bill Reilich says that Greece is the first town to get teqball gear in our area. There are different ways to play that includes soccer and volleyball skills.

“It is popular in the southern states,” said Danielle Wamser-Grosz, senior recreation leader at the Greece Parks & Rec. “We just got brand new tables and we are excited to utilize the tables. There’s all different variations of the sport. We’ve just been testing it out. It’s kind of new to us and we really hope that people join in on it.”

The community center is all-inclusive. Chair aerobics is super popular. Jesse Smith is at the Greece Community Center exercising twice a week. She is 89 years young.

“I try to walk around the perimeter of the room before the class starts,” said Smith. “I enjoy the class very much. The instructors are different both days and they’re both very, very good instructors.”

There is a new toddler gym and a new spin class starts up this week. There’s also a new lounge where seniors get together to play cards. The fireplace is the new lounge is super cozy. Nanette Harmon enjoys it. She moved to Greece two years ago.

“Well, we just discovered it,” Harmon said. “It is like picking up a rock and finding all these amazing things that are under there. I definitely use the walking track inside when it is cold. I walk here a lot. We love bringing our grandchildren here. Yes, it is just wonderful. It’s a wonderful place to move to.”

The Greece Community Center has welcomed 2,000 new members since the start of the year. Since January, residents have checked in the center 11,000 times for things to do indoors.
