GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A fire broke out at a vacant school in Guilford County Thursday afternoon, accelerating plans to demolish the building. It happened at Peeler Open Elementary School off Randall Street in Greensboro.

The school has been vacant since 2018, when a tornado moved through the area. The storm left students at Peeler Open Elementary School, Hampton Elementary School and Erwin Montessori without a classroom.

The COO of Guilford County Schools says Thursday's fire will accelerate demolition plans for Peeler Open Elementary School.

No one was hurt in the fire, according to the fire chief. The fire was contained by 1:45 p.m.
