RALEIGH, N.C. — A crash involving a small plane on one of Raleigh-Durham International Airport's runways caused the airfield to shut down Wednesday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center.

The crash happened at about 10:15 a.m., the FAA said. The airport's primary runway reopened shortly before noon, and RDU announced on social media about 8:30 p.m. that its other runway had reopened to flights.

Both the pilot and the passenger, Dr. Paul Chelminski of UNC Health, were taken to local hospitals, and Chelminski was released hours later, UNC Health spokesman Alan Wolf said in a news release Wednesday afternoon.

Chelminski was returning from a lecture in Wilmington when the crash happened, Wolf said.

The pilot, Art Johnson, who flies for UNC Air and joined UNC in 2013, was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, where he was listed in fair condition Wednesday afternoon, Wolf said.

"Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones, and we’re grateful to the first responders who helped following the accident," Wolf said.

The medical plane, a Socata TBM-700, belongs to UNC Air Operations, he said.

The Raleigh Fire Department assisted RDU in responding to the runway emergency.

Airport officials on Wednesday urged travelers to check their flight status with their airlines for information on possible delays.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
