A 53-year-old man was shot and killed by an N.C. state trooper after leading authorities on a chase, officials said. He ran from a traffic stop when the officer found out the man had multiple active arrest warrants, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
At about 9:45 a.m., a State Highway Patrol member stopped Philip Aiken Brown of Creedmoor on I-85 South near mile marker 185 in Durham County, when the trooper noticed Brown’s pickup truck didn’t have a registration plate, according to Sgt. Chris Knox with Highway Patrol.
Brown gave police false information when he was pulled over, but authorities discovered his identity, and that he had “multiple active orders for his arrest at the time of the traffic stop,” the highway patrol said. Brown then led troopers on a vehicle chase, taking them on the ramp to Red Mill Road, authorities said, but he lost control and hit an embankment.
“The driver failed to comply with the members' commands to display his hands and ultimately produced his hands displaying a dark object. The member fired his duty issued firearm striking the driver,” Knox with the patrol said.
Brown was taken to a hospital, but he was later pronounced dead, Knox said.
“Trooper Nolan J. Neal is identified as the involved member and is a four-and-a-half-year veteran stationed in Troop C, District 7, Durham County. Neal has been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, which is agency protocol in any trooper-involved shooting,” according to Knox.
The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, which is also standard procedure.
