The lawsuit filed in Wake County Superior Court claims a then 16-year-old was sexually assaulted in 2018 while attending the camp. The suit also claims staff failed to document the report of the assault at the time.

According to court documents, the lawsuit takes aim at WTC Wilderness Training and Consulting, an Oregon-based wilderness treatment company operating in North Carolina.

The company ran Trails Carolina from 2010 until its closing.

Trails Carolina closed in 2024 following the death of a 12-year-old boy while in the care of the wilderness therapy program.

The death was ruled a homicide by the state’s chief medical examiner, but no criminal charges were brought forth against the camp.
